As performing artists, lockdown meant we had to approach things differently. What better time to address social isolation & the concept of “home”, and to explore cross-genre musical paths? Perhaps the eventual defeat of Covid-19 will herald a renaissance in the performing arts, perhaps not, but with the climate emergency on the horizon, everything will change!

In support of Shelter Cymru, we have released a 10 track album of “lockdown” recordings – new (previously unreleased) material that was all created collaboratively by a range of diverse musicians, all recording from home during April & May 2020.

Why Shelter Cymru?

Despite making a living as a busker for many years & very occasionally sleeping rough, I cannot imagine what the covid-19 crisis must be like for those on the fringes of society. As a musician based in Wales, Shelter Cymru was therefore my first point of call for this project – they said yes!

The Lockdown Collective

Although this project & the charity it supports are based in Wales, this project transcends both musical & geographical boundaries, and has involved 28 musicians from various different countries. The idea was to first collect small musical ideas (riffs, rhythms, phrases, words, or sounds), then send these out for anyone interested to add to. This way, something new was created, similar to the old surreal parlour game called Consequences in which players write in turn on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of the writing, then pass it to the next player for a further contribution. For all working musicians there are uncertain times ahead, so it is with much gratitude that we would like to thank all the brilliant musicians involved for giving their time, creativity & imagination, freely. The tireless work & enthusiasm of guitarists Mark Ellwood & Al McLachlan was essential to getting this project up and running, and for getting some really great musicians involved. The album was produced by Sputnik, Mark, & Al (the three amigos).

Gwaith Cartref (homework) The Album

The purpose of this project was to create & release a “cross genre” digital album by “various” artists, with all revenue going directly to Shelter Cymru, and we have done just that. The finished album is now available to purchase on bandcamp.
